Having had some time to reflect on the trip to Honduras has been good. Here is a brief overview of what the trip entailed:
We got there on Saturday the 6th. We were staying and working with Hospital Bautista. They are a great presence in that community. Since I was still getting over the flu the first couple days, I was hoping that they wouldn't be too strenuous. Travel was the hardest part of Saturday, and I knew Sunday would be mostly church stuff, so it shouldn't be too taxing. Well, the church decided to have their service on the side of a mountain that day! Hah. Best way to get over the flu is to hike up a mountain. It was pretty rough, but I made it though the day and after that felt much better the rest of the week.
Our daily activities would change from day to day, and during the course of the day, so flexible was the buzz word for the week. Our group was broken into 2 teams so that we could go to different villages and cover more ground. Our goal was to really just meet people, talk with them, love on them, and hopefully share truth with them. Also while driving along, if we passed by a school we'd stop and ask if we could do a program for the students, which was always a yes. Can you imagine that happening in America? "Hey, we're a church group coming through the area, do mind if we take your students out of class and do a program about Jesus?" Yeah...right.
It was really cool though how appreciative the teachers were to us for coming. And getting to play with those sweet children was incredible. It was funny, and hard at times, not to be able to communicate with them. But "a smile goes a long way" was so true. It's also really cool that you can share the love of Jesus and glorify Him by playing "Pato, Pato, Ganso," or Duck, Duck, Goose with "the least of these."
So, it was a really great week experiencing God's strength in our weakness. See that He is able to do what He has set forth to do. A passage that really ministered to me while I was there was Isaiah 55:10-11:
"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it."
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it."
This is such a relief to know that all God wants us to do is be obedient. We can't open eyes or turn heart to Him, that's His job. We can just take comfort in the fact that even if we don't see immediate results and 100's of people don't "make a commitment for Christ," God is still working. His word is powerful, and can speak much more clearly and perfectly than we can. He's the one doing it, not us. And that's awesome.
